Self Reflection and Discovery of Self in a Cultural Context

Using acrylic paints, students were encouraged to create a self-representation using symbolism, generative themes, and creative imagery. We referenced artists like Kehinde Wiley and Frida Kahlo to explore representative means of self-expression. As a class, we learned and furthered our understanding of acrylic techniques; some students with extensive knowledge of the medium, and for some, it was their first time!

In addition to our representations, we discussed our weekly reflections, things we've learned over the past week and more!

Art Journals

Students partnered up to share their weekly reflections, and then shared these thoughts with the larger group! Students were able to connect topics and ideas as well as remind themselves of the content from last week!

Expanding Upon Generative Themes

Students were presented with 5 new prompts for generative themes that were more specific than our previous list. Focusing more on topics like cultural identity and community roles.

Historical Art Connection

We looked at artists like Kehinde Wiley and Frida Kahlo as references for this project, more specifically Kahlo's 1951 Still Life self portrait that used symbolized parts of her identity!

Self-Representations
