Digital Art Lesson Plan: The Shape of Who

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

Students will be assigned a random shape drawn by their instructor and will create a person out of it. This digital art project will introduce students to Procreate on an iPad, teaching them how to download and open new files, create line art, and work with layers while exploring character design and creative thinking.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Students will learn how to open and set up a new file in Procreate.

  2. Students will learn the basics of digital line art and how to use different brush tools.

  3. Students will gain experience in creating and managing layers in digital art.

  4. Students will develop their creative problem-solving skills by transforming abstract shapes into human characters.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  1. iPad or Laptop with a connected USB tablet

  2. Access to the internet

  3. Procreate

  4. The instructor provided/created random organic shapes in a transparent PNG file.

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW

  1. Introduction (10 minutes)

    • Discuss how artists can find inspiration in simple shapes.

    • Show examples of famous character designs that started as basic shapes.

    • Demonstrate opening a new file in Procreate and adjusting canvas settings.

  2. Shape Assignment & Sketching (20 minutes)

    • Each student receives a random shape drawn by the instructor.

    • Students brainstorm and lightly sketch how they can transform the shape into a person.

    • Introduce line art techniques and demonstrate using different brushes.

  3. Layering & Refining (25 minutes)

    • Students refine their line art using separate layers for details (e.g., face, hair, clothing).

    • Instructor demonstrates how to adjust opacity, erase, and blend lines to create a polished drawing.

  4. Reflection & Sharing (15 minutes)

    • Students share their creations with a partner or the class.

    • Discuss what worked well and what challenges they faced.

    • Encourage students to reflect on how digital tools can enhance creativity.
